Welcome to the ninth newsletter from fireside.rs, ‘unlocking creative productivity by gathering humans effectively.’

Later this month I’ll be in Australia delivering fireside.rs workshops at University of Queensland and Hear & Say in Brisbane, then at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne. What a gift!

Having delivered five already, I’m starting to reflect on how these workshops are safe containers to shake off entrenched ideas of collaborative formats / discourse, whilst also providing an opportunity for rapid relational trust building through a unique experience.

Big words for: people have a positive time, think and want to do things differently plus find connection in a shared novel event.

And as we enter the final quarter of the year my thoughts go to closing off the ‘no-fee offer’ with some final workshops in Wellington / Auckland / Queenstown during November. Just need to find a host / venue / community who are interested in designing effective human gatherings.

If that sounds like you please do get in touch.

Until then, take care of yourselves and each other,

DK

SHOW NOTES & PULL QUOTES

5.21 : “So while I was sort of, you know, faffing around opening the venue, I was also developing a leadership development program using horses as a training tool.”

7.35 : “…this way of working with horses takes the whole animal into consideration you’re really learning about the horse through being attentive and reading the horse and then adjusting what you do in order to bring out the best in your horse and thus make it safe to ride and safe to partner. So I’m sure you’re already seeing all of those parallels with the world of leadership.”

8.22 : “I teased out those principles and I created a framework for a leadership program. And it’s remarkable because it’s not classroom based and people actually have to step into the arena and I partner them up with a horse and then fireworks and magic and tears to begin with sometimes too.”

10.31 : “And the reason I like to use horses that have never been on this program is because I want it to be challenging. I want the horse and human to create their own connection. So I look at the horse’s energy and I look at the horse’s attitude and then I match similar horses.”

15.59 : “And this would be the sort of story I’ve seen so many times. And it’s so exciting because once you lose the fear, you can do anything. And her career went through the roof.”

20.18 : “But if somebody is asking the horse to stop at an arm’s length and then they take a step backwards as they’re asking the horse to stop, the horse thinks, you don’t really want me to stop and you don’t mean it. And the horse will just push them out of the way. Well, you know, this is giving the human some really startling feedback. I don’t believe you and you ain’t my leader.”

27.03 : “…the program isn’t about the horse. The horse is just a fantastic way for, you know, showing you what true leadership feels like and how it should feel and how it should feel exciting, confident, bold and fearless, but also warm, compassionate and empathetic. And how it feels when you get that balance and suddenly the horse will follow you anywhere. Wow, that’s a moment to be treasured. And then people take that feeling, they’ve built up that cell memory, they take it back to the workplace and then funnily enough, their careers take off.”

29.32 : “…so many people are working from home and i think that really alienates people, it makes it a lot harder to to lead when you’re not in the same room as people you know for me it’s all about watching being attentive listening, listening is very important and quite underrated.”
